A RECURRING DREAM: THE STRUGGLE
28” x 42” Watercolor on cotton paper, 2021
“Since I was little, I’ve had a recurring nightmare that always left me so unsettled once I finally woke up. I love all animals and have a particular fondness for reptiles. I have owned a snake named Jake since the 5th grade. In this dream, I am barefoot and outside, feeling the earth underneath me. I come across a venomous snake and realize the ground is covered in them. In terror, I run to my childhood home and encounter a large python who has begun to swallow my pet snake. I grab him and pull with all my might, and then after a tug of war, Jake ends up ripping in half. In this painting, I am represented by a grey fox, a large female holding a smaller snake who is both being swallowed by a king snake and holding a hummingbird. I am adult and child at the same time, experiencing the same dream with different eyes. Saturated and visceral, the landscape is both natural and unnatural. I dread this dream, but it reminds me of the precarity of life, the duality of passion and respect for the unknown.”
