FOR HIS FOUL SHE MORPHED, FOR HIS LOVE HE MAIMED
15” x 12” Gouache on cotton paper, 2021
"A serenade of pain and betrayal. This piece is another interpretation of a story I created, and I tend to make my own folklore to continue the act of storytelling that my childhood was so filled with. As a brief summary of this tragedy, a coyote mother of pups is struggling to feed them. Until she comes across a rancher with chickens, her hunger and maternal instinct helps her hatch a plan of deceit. She decides to morph into a beautiful woman, so she can seduce the lone rancher and steal his foul. Every night she visits him as a woman, and afterwards she leaves with a chicken for her pups. One day the rancher notices his chickens are dwindling, so he sets a trap for the suspected coyote. Our heroine gets her paw trapped and chews it off to escape. The next morning, she returns to the rancher as a woman who is maimed, and in his horror, he asks what happened to her. She explains that a man she had fallen for had hurt her badly and she was going to find a new refuge for herself and her children. The rancher, saddened and shocked by this news, gives his lover a keychain to remember him by. The keychain is her own paw, and they part ways, hurt and deceived."
