Without art, the crudeness of reality would make the world unbearable."

   – George Bernard Shaw

ART IN THE TIME OF COVID-19

We believe art is good medicine––both the making and the viewing of it––and we’re committed to being a life-positive art resource through this and all times, for our artists, students, the Comfort/Hill Country community and each other as much as we’re able. We're confident that this unusual time will pass, and we will return to 716 High Street more committed than ever to our MAKE ART+FIND JOY values.

Until then, please be well, continue to make art, and in the midst of what seems like chaos and confusion, may you find joy. Read below to find out how we're moving forward:
EXHIBITIONS
Our exhibitions will continue as we work to move them online until further notice. We are available for appointments in the gallery if there is something specific you wish to view and purchase, as long as public mandates allow.

Visit our Online Gallery/Shop to view and purchase* original fine art and books.

Visit Exhibits+Events to see what's currently featured and what's coming next.

Current Exhibition:  April Dressed in All Its Trim

* Note: During the months of April and May, 2020, we are reducing our standard commission from 50% to 35% to help support our artists. This means your purchase of artwork will go further for the artists, while helping to sustain our valuable teaching and thoughtfully curated exhibitions. Our studio/gallery expenses remain the same during this period. We believe artists are critical to the health and well-being of our world, and we want to do what we can to support ours while ensuring we're able to remain in the Comfort/Texas Hill Country community.
CLASSES
We have cancelled all in-person classes and workshops until further notice.

We're working diligently to bring you live classes available via Zoom, as well as producing art instruction video content on our Youtube channel. Check back often for updates.

We are still hoping to lead Draw+Paint Excursions to Scotland and France later this year, and we'll update those plans as things develop.

Visit Classes+Workshops to see what classes are currently available and what's coming next.

WHY ART IS IMPORTANT
Art is alchemy. It takes life experiences, world events, ideas, observations, emotions, questions, losses and triumphs, silence and chaos, the senses, materials and objects––and through the processes of inquiry, experimentation, interpretation, decision-making and skilled construction, an artist transforms these into new forms of expression that can move us, inform us, and change us. Without some way to process and engage with the unexpressed, we merely exist. Whether we are viewing art, living and engaging with it, making it or teaching it, art can comfort and heal us. It imbues meaning into our existence. It enriches us. And while we believe that what the world needs now and always more than anything else is love, we believe a very near second is art.
Art is much less important than life, but what a poor life without it."

Then what are we fighting for?"

   – Sir Winston Churchill, his reply when he was asked to cut arts funding to support the war effort
I don't want life to imitate art. I want life to BE art."

Art is the only way to run away without leaving home."

   – Twyla Tharp
Art helps us access and express parts of ourselves that are often unavailable to other forms of human interaction. It flies below the radar delivering nourishment for our soul and returning with stories from the unconscious. A world without art is an inhuman world. Making and consuming art lifts our spirits and keeps us sane. Art––like science and religion––helps us make meaning from our lives, and to make meaning is to make us feel better."

   – Grayson Perry, artist

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see."

– Degas
Art must be life––it must belong to everybody."
