WIND & DUST

AN EXHIBITION OF FILM PHOTOGRAPHY + POLAROID EMULSION LIFTS CELEBRATING FAR WEST TEXAS BY LIZ POTTER
Through these different but related bodies of work is woven a connective thread—how I embrace the elements of West Texas with its brilliant sunlight, expansive skies, rocky earth, and ever-present wind.

The color Polaroid emulsion lifts are more about the illusion of wind’s invisible force on the delicate than the representational nature of the subject matter. They depict motion seemingly frozen as a moment of time in memory.

The black and white self-portrait series illustrates my deep interconnection with the high desert region—its harsh beauty and remoteness, a wildness that makes me want to be part of it and playful in it. I tell stories of nature, adventure, traces of history, and gratitude for the opportunity to live my life in this environment. These images were created on black and white film with a Noblex 150 medium format panoramic camera, then printed on fiber-based paper in my home darkroom.

Wind & Dust is part of the 28th Annual FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA Photography Festival.

The exhibition is also part of the 10th Annual Comfort Art Festival. Artists will be on hand at local businesses throughout the day to greet visitors and discuss their work.

Liz Potter received her Bachelor of Photojournalism form the University of Texas at Austin in 1990. After graduation, she attended a 2-week program at the Maine Photographic Workshops. While there, she acquired a Holga camera that ended up being her primary camera until 2017. She would claim temporary insanity, but 27 years is a long time to be 'temporarily' anything! In 2018, after 30 years in Austin, she moved to the quiet, remote small town of Alpine, in the far western part of Texas that borders Northern Mexico. She had started to lag in her excitement for photography while in Austin, but with the move came an intense desire to pick it up again...and to ditch the Holga. She bought a Pentax 67 and off she went, using it to shoot the beautiful landscape, people, events, and the vibe of small-town Texas.

Liz Potter is an artist and photographer living in Alpine, Texas, as well as a self-professed "analog girl living in a digital world."
