LUCIA LAVILLA-HAVELIN
TEXTILES / EMBROIDERY

Picture
ARTIST STATEMENT
"I have been working with textiles as my art form for over 50 years, I use what has been referred to as “women’s work” to express contemporary themes, study women’s issues and address current events. During the last eleven years, I have been concentrating on one of a kind embroidered works. My focus is narrative, to tell a story, whether it is portraying the personal with my self portraits, representing family stories, or confronting political and environmental issues of the day. I design and hand-stitch each piece using a simple satin stitch with cotton embroidery floss on linen. The image is of primary importance and together with my strong use of color, it tells the story I want to convey."

— Lucia LaVilla-Havelin

ARTIST STATEMENT: APRIL DRESSED IN ALL ITS TRIM
"Lungs of the Earth which appears on the homepage of my website, is my response to the burning of the Amazon rainforest. As a member of an environmental activist group of writers and artists, Stone in Stream, I created this piece for Earth in Peril/Earth in Praise, the February 2020 issue of “Voices de la Luna”, San Antonio’s Literary Journal celebrating the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. This piece has also become an homage to the people, wildlife and land of Australia during their recent horrific wildfires."

— Lucia LaVilla-Havelin
